4. Book of the Month

We are pleased to feature the first anthology Chi Rho Press published, "Called OUT -- The Voices and Gifts of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Trangendered Presbyterians," edited by Jane Adams Spahr, Kathryn Poethig, Selisse Berry, and Melinda McLain. Published in 1995, "Called OUT" features the stories of 40 LGBT people telling their stories of their lives in, and for some of them, out of the Presbyterian Churches.

William P. Thompson, former Stated Clerk, United Presbyterian Church (USA), said, "Presbyterians should read 'Called OUT' within the year." This is an important book, an exciting book, a heart-wrenching book, and a deeply moving book. You will read the stories of women and men who have been called by God to serve in ministry. They have had what they believe to be the glory and what some may choose to believe is the misfortune of being called out to ministry within the Presbyterian Church. They have been challenged, blocked, and denied in their pursuit of God's clear call on their lives because of their sexual orientation.

These are the words of God's Gay people in the Presbyterian Church, their anger, their despair, their hope, their dreams, and their call for justice. Celebrate with us the wildly inclusive Gospel of Jesus Christ. These stories effect more than Presbyterians and are riveting reading for all people of faith and for all LGBT people.

Here are some of the sexual minority children of God who wish to share their stories with you. They will make you weep, laugh aloud, become angry and sad with them, and be joyful.

Included in this remarkable volume are articles by all four editors (the Rev.
Jane Adams Spahr is a Lesbian evangelist and heads up That All May Freely
Serve), and other notable Presbyterians including Lisa Bove, Lawrence Reh,
Rodger Wilson, Marvin Ellison, Daniel Smith, Charlotte Sindt writing about her late son David, Doug Calderwood, Scott Anderson, Kathleen Buckley, Robert Ochoa-Schutz, Lisa Larges, Chris Glaser, James Anderson, George Link, Dick Hasbany and Craig Machado, Laurene Lafontaine, Howard Warren, Winifred Legerton, Will Smith, Jim Earhart, Georgeann Wilcoxson, Kathryn Cartledge, Walter Jay Kleine, Jr., Barbara Lynn Smith, Merrill Proudfoot, Martha Juillerat and Tammy Lindahl, Charles Collins, Lorna Shoemaker, Susan Leo, James Graves, Kathleen Morrison, Bill Silver, Bet Hannon, Diana Vezmar-Bailey, and Sandy Brawders.

"Called OUT" also includes "A Brief History of the Movement for Full Inclusion of LGBT Persons in the Presbyterian Church" and "A Brief Introduction to 'Presby-Speak,'" both by Melinda McLain, a Chronology by Jim Anderson, and a Bibliography.

"Called OUT" is 273 pages, paper back, and is available from Chi Rho Press for $15.95 plus shipping and handling. Write Orders@ChiRhoPress.com to order your copy.
