1. ONEList Update
Our conversion to ONEList of the "Chi Rho Press" eNewsletter
mailing
list did not go as smoothly as we'd hoped, as many of you know. To
compound the challenge I also moved the "Weekly Gay Coach"
eNewsletter to ONEList. With close to 1,500 readers between each of
these publications it has been interesting to say the least. Even
with the problems I'm confident the ONEList system will be a vast
improvement over manually maintaining these lists.
Passwords: In the initial message welcoming you from ONEList a
password to the account they set up for you was sent. Since ONEList
is "user driven" each reader can go to the ONEList website and
add,
delete, or change their own membership parameters. If you did not
get a password, or have lost it, please go to the ONEList website
(http://www.OneList.com), enter your
e-mail address, and request your
password. It will be e-mailed to you and can be changed once you're
on the site. Although to continue to receive our eNewsletter you
need do nothing at this time.
Announcement Only: The welcome letter sent out by ONEList seems to
indicate that this is a two way list to which anyone can post
messages that are sent would be sent to the entire list.
This is not the case! This list is a one way list and you will only
be receiving our eNewsletter and other announcements from the staff
and offices of Chi Rho Press.
SPAM: ONElist currently defines spam as unsolicited e-mail sent to
many people for commercial or personal gain. ONElist has a strict
policy against unsolicited e-mail, or spam. It is against the ONElist
Terms of Service to send unsolicited e-mail to people advertising a
ONElist community.
We also feel strongly about unsolicited e-mail. We will only send
e-mail that is related to our eNewsletter or our other work.
(Announcements, Telephone Workshops, Special Offers, etc.)
PRIVACY: We would like to clearly state that we value all of you and
will protect everyone's anonymity. We will never lend or sell your
name or e-mail address to anyone, ever!
Also ONElist is a licensee of the TRUSTe Privacy Program. The
statement at (http://www.onelist.com/info/privacy.html)
discloses the privacy practices for the ONElist e-mail communities.
ADS: ONEList is free for us to use. The work they do for us is
mostly automated, yet I've talked with Kate (a very helpful women) by
phone a number of times. ONEList is advertiser supported and there
will appear an ad of up to three text lines at the end of each
message. I've been assured these ads will not contain offensive
material of any kind. We may choose to opt out of the ads at some
point by paying a fee. The ads so far appear to be mostly for
ONEList and don't get in the way.
I trust that this update has been helpful. Please feel free to e-mail
me with any questions or comments.
Peace & Blessings,
Ronald DeVrou

2. "Gay By God" Teleclass
Chi Rho Press is teaming up with GayCoach.com to sponsor a unique
teleclass series called "Gay By God." The first telephone workshop
is scheduled for Thursday, September 23, at 9 pm (EDT). This new
series of teleclasses (telephone workshops) is co-sponsored with
Ronald DeVrou. In addition to being our "Humble List Servant"
who
maintains our e-mail list and sends out this eNewsletter, Ron is
treasurer of Chi Rho Press' board of directors. Professionally, Ron
is a Psychotherapist and Personal Life Coach in Washington, DC.
Ron also leads a successful series of telephone workshops called "Gay
Dating 2000," with the next one being offered on Thursday, September
16th. For more information about Ron's work please visit his website
at (http://www.GayCoach.com)
The "Gay By God" telephone workshop series will center around
LGBT
Spirituality. The guest host of the first workshop on Sept. 23 will
be Adam DeBaugh, Director of Chi Rho Press.
The first workshop will be a discussion of Gay Spirituality. Future
"Gay By God" workshops will include some of the authors of books
published by Chi Rho Press and who have written and thought
extensively about the spirituality of LGBT culture. We are sure the
"Gay By God" series will be an enriching and enlightening time
for all of us.
For more information about the "Gay By God" telephone workshop
on
September 23, please e-mail Ron DeVrou at Workshops@GayByGod.com
or
Adam DeBaugh at GayByGod@ChiRhoPress.com.
The "Gay By God" series of workshops will be interactive telephone
workshops in which each participant calls a "bridge number"
to be a
part of the call. The workshops are free and the only cost will be
your long distance charges to the bridge number, usually around $5 to
$6 for the hour depending on your long distance carrier.
The workshop will begin at 9 pm EDT Washington DC/New York time (8 pm
in Chicago, 7 pm in Denver, and 6 pm in Los Angeles). This will
allow all of you from around the country to participate from the
privacy of your own home.
Participation is limited to the first 30 people to register, so if
you would like to register early, or get more information about the
workshops, please e-mail Ronald at WorkShop@GayByGod.com
or Adam at
GayByGod@ChiRhoPress.com.
We are looking forward to these exciting telephone workshops and are
sure you will find them useful. You are welcome to share the
information about these workshops with others also.

3. Featured Link of the Month.
We offer you a Link to a wonderful web page that we value each month.
These links are web pages of religious organizations and individuals
who serve the lesbian/gay community.
Soulforce.org is the web site for the Rev. Dr. Mel White and his
partner Gary Nixon, and their Soulforce Ministries. Mel is a former
speech writer and ghost writer for such right-wing religious
luminaries as Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and Oliver North until he
came out as a Gay man. He served for a number of years as Minister
of Justice for the UFMCC.
Mel and Gary have been inspired by the non-violent passive resistance
tactics taught by Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and
more and more have concentrated their considerable efforts toward
applying these principles to the conflict with Jerry Falwell. An
historic exchange of open letters between Mel and Jerry Falwell has
resulted in plans for a dinner scheduled for October with 200 LGBT
Christians and members of Falwell's Thomas Road Baptist Church.
Check out Mel's web page and read about his ministry and the
interaction with Falwell.
His web page's address is: www.soulforce.org

4. Special Offer
Dr. Rembert Truluck is on our mind! As we start designing and laying
out our next publication, Dr. Truluck's massive "Steps to Recovery
from Bible Abuse," his first book (which we published) is dwindling
on our shelves. "Invitation to Freedom" was published in
1993 and is a 68 page series of Bible studies which focus
on personal evangelism for the LGBT community.
"Invitation to Freedom" has remained one of our enduring favorites
and is excellent for small groups. It contains 10 Bible studies
which can be easily used for small group curricula. "Invitation to
Freedom," the subtitle of which is "Bible Studies in Personal
Evangelism,"
is an excellent workbook on personal evangelism, including
chapters on a number of Bible passages that explain and
encourage the work of the Great Commission for everyone.
Dr. Truluck believes that personal evangelism starts with one's self.
Too often Gay and Lesbian people have been told that they are not
worthy of God's love, so the first person we need to bring the Good
News of Jesus Christ is ourselves!
"Invitation to Freedom" sells for $7.00 but in honor of Dr.
Truluck's
upcoming book, it is on sale to readers of this eNewsletter through
the month of September for $5.00, plus shipping and handling. e-mail
your order to Orders@ChiRhoPress.com.

5. Book of the Month
We are pleased to feature the first anthology Chi Rho Press
published, "Called OUT -- The Voices and Gifts of Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, and Trangendered Presbyterians," edited by Jane Adams
Spahr, Kathryn Poethig, Selisse Berry, and Melinda McLain.
Published in 1995, "Called OUT" features the stories of 40 LGBT
people telling their stories of their lives in, and for some of them,
out of the Presbyterian Churches.
William P. Thompson, former Stated Clerk, United Presbyterian Church
(USA), said, "Presbyterians should read 'Called OUT' within the
year." This is an important book, an exciting book, a
heart-wrenching book, and a deeply moving book. You will read the
stories of women and men who have been called by God to serve in
ministry. They have had what they believe to be the glory and what
some may choose to believe is the misfortune of being called out to
ministry within the Presbyterian Church. They have been challenged,
blocked, and denied in their pursuit of God's clear call on their
lives because of their sexual orientation.
These are the words of God's Gay people in the Presbyterian Church,
their anger, their despair, their hope, their dreams, and their call
for justice. Celebrate with us the wildly inclusive Gospel of Jesus
Christ. These stories effect more than Presbyterians and are
riveting reading for all people of faith and for all LGBT people.
Here are some of the sexual minority children of God who wish to
share their stories with you. They will make you weep, laugh aloud,
become angry and sad with them, and be joyful.
Included in this remarkable volume are articles by all four editors
(the Rev. Jane Adams Spahr is a Lesbian evangelist and heads up That
All May Freely Serve), and other notable Presbyterians including Lisa
Bove, Lawrence Reh, Rodger Wilson, Marvin Ellison, Daniel Smith,
Charlotte Sindt writing about her late son David, Doug Calderwood,
Scott Anderson, Kathleen Buckley, Robert Ochoa-Schutz, Lisa Larges,
Chris Glaser, James Anderson, George Link, DickHasbany and
Craig Machado, Laurene Lafontaine, Howard Warren,
Winifred Legerton, Will Smith, Jim Earhart, Georgeann Wilcoxson,
Kathryn Cartledge, Walter Jay Kleine, Jr., Barbara Lynn Smith,
Merrill Proudfoot, Martha Juillerat and Tammy Lindahl, Charles
Collins, Lorna Shoemaker, Susan Leo, James Graves, Kathleen Morrison,
Bill Silver, Bet Hannon, Diana Vezmar-Bailey, and Sandy Brawders.
"Called OUT" also includes "A Brief History of the Movement
for Full
Inclusion of LGBT Persons in the Presbyterian Church" and "A
Brief
Introduction to 'Presby-Speak,'" both by Melinda McLain, a Chronology
by Jim Anderson, and a Bibliography.
"Called OUT" is 273 pages, paper back, and is available from
Chi Rho
Press for $15.95 plus shipping and handling. Write
Orders@ChiRhoPress.com to
order your copy.

6. The Last Word
**** Washington area people! We are looking for a part time office
assistant to help with filling orders, returning phone calls, filing,
and possibly some on-line marketing. The person needs to be near
Gaithersburg, Maryland, and available evenings and weekends to start.
We may want to add day time hours later, but we will be very
flexible about hours.
Please e-mail Adam@ChiRhoPress.com
or call me at 301/926-1208.
**** There are a couple of exciting developments around the Chi Rho
Press offices these days. We have begun the layout and design stage
of "Steps to Recovery from Bible Abuse" by Dr. Rembert Truluck
and
will be able to announce a pre-publication sale in the next issue of
this eNewsletter.
**** In order to fund the production of Dr. Truluck's book, $1,000
Promissory Notes at 8% interest are available. We are looking for
people who are interested in supporting Dr. Truluck's excellent work
by helping to fund the publication of his book. The notes will be
repaid over a two year period at 8% simple interest, with payments
being sent to you quarterly. Write Adam@ChiRhoPress.com for more
information. Read more about Dr. Truluck's ministry and "Steps to
Recovery from Bible Abuse" at http://www.truluck.com.
**** Assistant Editor Kevin Stone Fries has begun work on editing a
new book by Christopher Hubble, a wonderful retelling of the love
story of David and Jonathan as a role model for the LGBT community.
**** We are finalizing plans to be able to accept credit card
payment. And the new web site at ChiRhoPress.com is nearing
completion -- and we will be putting up an "under construction"
version within the next week. These are exciting times indeed! We
are glad you are a part of Chi Rho Press.
Well, that wraps up our eighth eNewsletter. With September comes
(hopefully) lower temperatures and even some rain for us
drought-stricken folks in the Mid-Atlantic states. And school is
starting again for many. Summer is drawing to a close and we at
Chi Rho Press hope your summer was a time of refreshment
and renewal, and that autumn brings energy, joy, and contentment.
And good reading!
Please keep us in your prayers. We hope our publications will be of
use to you in your life and ministry.
We will talk with you again in a couple of weeks.
Grace and peace,
R. Adam DeBaugh
